What is a general plan?
In very general terms a general plan (also known as a master plan or comprehensive plan) is a document that attempts to map out a communities future in terms of community development. Although most deal with similar issues, there is no set template for what a general plan is. Usually a community's general plan will have the following elements: land use, transportation, housing, opens space (or parks and recreation), urban design, population and growth projections, environmental, public facilities and utilities, and economic development.
Generally each city’s plan is tailored to their particular circumstances; for example a city that relies on tourism might have a particular focus on the tourism industry, or a city located on a waterway might pay particular attention to environmental issues. The City of Taylorsville has its own unique circumstances and our new plan reflects a direction that is appropriate for our community.
How does a city use a general plan to implement its vision?
Our new general plan, like the previous plan, was officially adopted by the City Council as the “blue print” of the community. That means that all decisions made by the City Council, Planning Commission, Board of Adjustment, Staff and any other official decision of the community should be consistent with the objectives and recommendations contained within the new general plan.
How can I get more involved?
The Taylorsville General Plan update includes a recommendation to establish a new committee known as the General Plan Steering Committee. The committee will provide oversight and advice to the City regarding implementation of the new plan. If you are interested in serving on this new committee, please contact Mrs. Elaine Waegner, Volunteer and Events Coordinator, at 963-5400 x 3014.
